FlashAcademy Glossary
Here you will find all things FlashAcademy and their meanings. If you have any further questions or suggestions to add to our glossary, please email our friendly team at support@flashacademy.com.
Teacher Dashboard
Licence: A licence represents one active student account on FlashAcademy. The number of licences your school holds determines how many students can be added to the platform. For trust-wide agreements, licences are held at trust level and can be distributed across schools as needs evolve.
Centre ID: Your school's unique identification code, used by both teachers and students to log in to FlashAcademy. You can find your Centre ID at the top of your Teacher Dashboard. Keep this handy, as students will need it every time they log in.
Teacher Dashboard: The Teacher Dashboard is your main working space on FlashAcademy. It is where you add and manage students and teachers, create classes, set tasks and assessments, track progress, access reports, and much more. You can access it at Dashboard: Login using your Centre ID, email address, and password. We recommend using Google Chrome for the best experience.
Administrator: The Administrator role gives full access to all features on the Teacher Dashboard, including adding and removing students and teachers, creating classes, setting tasks and assessments, and viewing all student data across the school.
Full-Access: A Full-Access teacher can view the classes they have been assigned to by an Administrator. They can set tasks and assessments and reset student passwords, but cannot add or remove students and teachers from the Dashboard.
Limited-Access: A Limited-Access teacher can view the data of students who have been assigned to them by an Administrator. This role is ideal for subject teachers or support staff who need to monitor a specific group of learners without access to the wider school data.
Class: A group of students created on the Teacher Dashboard by an Administrator. Classes make it easy to organise your learners, assign tasks, run assessments, and track progress by group. We recommend grouping students by proficiency level, for example Grade A, Grade B, etc., so you can assign targeted lessons as tasks directly from your Dashboard.
Task: A task is a lesson or set of lessons assigned to a student or class directly from the Teacher Dashboard. Setting tasks gives learners a clear focus and ensures they are working on the most relevant content for their level. See: Setting a Task – FlashAcademy
Assessment: The FlashAcademy EAL Proficiency Assessment measures a student's language level across all four skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It can be run as many times as needed within the academic year and is a key tool for tracking progress and informing lesson planning. We recommend assessing learners termly. See: Setting an Assessment – FlashAcademy
Lesson Library: Here is where teachers can find a full overview of all content available on FlashAcademy. Lessons are organised into categories, and categories are grouped into levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Within each category, teachers can also find printable resources including worksheets and activities, which can be used in intervention sessions, one-to-one support, or sent home as homework to reinforce learning.
Custom Lessons: Custom Lessons allow teachers to create their own bespoke lessons by selecting and combining vocabulary from different categories and levels available in the Lesson Library of FlashAcademy - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. This is a powerful feature for pre-teaching curriculum vocabulary or targeting specific language gaps for individual learners or groups.
Reports: The Reports section of the Teacher Dashboard gives you access to engagement and progress data for your students and classes. You can download Excel reports with lesson completion and assessment data, or click on an individual student's name to export a comprehensive PDF of their full learning journey. This data is valuable for evidencing impact and identifying learners who may need additional support.
Live Leaderboard: The Live Leaderboard displays students' XP scores in real time and can be projected in the classroom to motivate learners and create healthy competition. Many schools also print the leaderboard and display it in their EAL Corner, updating it monthly to celebrate progress.
Learning Experience
WebApp: The WebApp is the browser-based version of FlashAcademy, accessible at web.flashacademy.com. It is recommended for use on school laptops and desktop computers. For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome. Students log in using their Centre ID, username, and password.
Centre ID: Your school's unique identification code, used by both teachers and students to log in. Students will need the Centre ID, along with their username and password, every time they access FlashAcademy. See the Teacher Dashboard section for more detail on where to find it.
Language Pathway: When a student logs in to FlashAcademy for the first time, they select their language pathway - their home language and the language they are learning (English). This determines which translation support they receive throughout the app. If a student's home language is not available, or if they are not literate in their home language, select the English-to-English pathway.
Home Language: The home language is the first language a student speaks at home. Setting the correct home language ensures that on-screen prompts, vocabulary, and instructions are shown alongside English in a language the student understands. This supports comprehension and helps newly arrived learners access content independently from the start. See: Home Language – FlashAcademy
FlashCard: FlashCards introduce the vocabulary students will learn in each lesson. Each word includes an icon, audio, and a pronunciation video. Some words are shown in sentences for additional context, and any grammar, vocabulary, or culture tips from the lesson can also be found here.
Lesson: Lessons are the core learning units in FlashAcademy. Each lesson contains a series of challenges designed to build vocabulary while developing reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. Students can repeat lessons as many times as they like, and repetition is encouraged as it reinforces language learning.
Category: A category is a topic-based collection of lessons, for example Food and Drinks, School Essentials, or Holiday and Travel. Students can explore categories freely, or teachers can assign specific categories as tasks based on curriculum needs or proficiency level.
Games: Once a student has completed two lessons within a category, they unlock word games based on the vocabulary they have learnt. Games are not a mandatory part of the learning journey but are a great way to reinforce vocabulary in a fun and competitive way. Projecting the Live Leaderboard during game time is a popular way to motivate learners in the classroom.
XP Points: XP (experience) points are earned by completing lessons and playing games in the FlashAcademy app. Students can earn a maximum of 1,000 XP per lesson. XP is visible to teachers on the Dashboard and is a useful indicator of engagement and effort alongside formal assessment data.
Object Translator: The Object Translator is a feature available on the installed version of the FlashAcademy app on mobile devices, tablets or iPads. It uses the device's camera to photograph an object and generates a translation in the student's home language and English. It is particularly useful for newly arrived students, as teachers often use it during a school tour to help learners identify and understand key objects around them in both languages.
